It’s just about guaranteed that, at some point, you’ll have to produce a CV to support a job application. In many cases, your CV is the first thing a potential employer will see of you, so ensuring it’s put together in a way that makes a strong first impression is crucial.
List your personal details first (i.e., name, where you live, contact details and residency status)
List your qualifications along with the year of completion
Clearly outline your professional work experience
Use bullet points to succinctly demonstrate both responsibilities and achievements for each position you’ve been in. These should include facts and figures.
If you’ve had multiple jobs with one employer, start with your most recent role first, outlining your responsibilities and the dates during which you held each role.
Outline your systems experience, including Excel capability and the functions you’re familiar with.
Length should be around 2-4 pages (dependent upon how much experience you have)
If you’ve had numerous roles throughout your career, go into the most detail about those you’ve held over the past 5 to 10 years, so as to not cause information overload
Ensure your CV is constructed in a way that is clear and professional. You can’t go wrong with Arial font in size 10!
List your qualifications and work experience in reverse chronological order - both the month and year are important
Ensure that you explain any gaps in your work history adequately, to ensure they are not misinterpreted
Don’t assume the reader knows your current or ex-employer – provide a clear description including industry, revenue, number of employees etc.
Don’t use company-specific jargon, terms or acronyms
Be clear on what YOU did specifically and what you did as part of your team
Make sure you proofread your CV thoroughly, correcting any spelling or grammar mistakes
