A Systems Accountant can perform a wide range of duties. These may include, but are not limited to;
Reviewing systems performance and identifying system issues
Managing system upgrades with the IT department
Designing and implementing internal system controls (preventative and detective) to provide quality assurance over financial data
Reviewing and maintaining all financial systems policies and procedures
Collaborating with IT and financial staff to meet business requirements
Troubleshooting and fixing finance-related system issues
Training and supporting finance team members in the use of financial systems and procedures
Working with the IT team to design delivery schedules for systems development
Working with business intelligence software

A Systems Accountant is a specialist role and acts as the interface between the finance team and the IT department, focusing solely on the financial systems. The typical duties of a Systems Accountant include reviewing and upgrading systems, issue identification, designing internal system controls, and ensuring all financial data is secure.
An accounting system holds all financial data of the business including payroll, sales, purchases, budgeting, forecasting, etc. and is separate from other company IT systems. A standard finance system may also have a Business Intelligence tool that allows for intelligent reporting. The data will be stored in a secure environment and password-protected to avoid fraud and other nefarious activity.
A Systems Accountant will have a background in Accounting and will have demonstrated skills and interest in working on the systems side of accounting. Sometimes candidates will have done a double degree in Accounting and IT which has been seen as beneficial.
